So you might be asking yourself - What is a "House Concert"? Simply put, it's an up-close and personal performance in a comfortable environment. It's an opportunity for artist and listener to engage in a very rare way. It's a conversation where most concerts are monologues. There's a give and take between the audience and the artist, and consequently we take a journey together - through the songs and the stories shared, we go some place together that we could never go alone. It's raw, it's beautiful, it's communal, it's real, and it's personal.
If that description sparks something inside of you, then there are three things you should know:
First, house concerts are a great time. After every house concert I've played, people have told me how they love the sense of community, the creative energy, and the shared journey of sorts that we take as we follow the music and the stories for an evening. Many of our hosts enjoy the experience so much that they end up hosting again, so you might become addicted if you're not careful!
Second, house concerts are easy to host. If you've planned a birthday party, engagement party, garage sale, potluck, or neighborhood cookout then you already have all the skills required to host a house concert. If space in your house is a concern, let's talk about it - you probably have more room than you think (the cozy atmosphere is one of the endearing qualities of a house concert). But there are other location possibilities as well - club houses, community rooms, church basements, barns, and the list goes on....
Third, house concerts don't necessarily have to cost you any money. We generally like to get $200-$300 per house concert. So if you can get 20-30 people to come out and you ask them each to bring $5 - $10 to "cover the music" - Viola! You've just hosted a house concert with no cost to you. Of course there are other arrangements that can be made and we have had hosts who "gifted" a house concert to their friends and family by covering all the costs themselves, and we've seen a few families together and split the cost. We can get as creative as you like.
If you have actually read all of this and you're still excited about hosting a house concert, we'd love to talk with you. We can provide you our personal expertise as well as a small guide that walks you through the details and is guaranteed to make your house concert an evening you and your guests will remember for years to come!
